Soft, fluffy yeast buns filled with savory cabbage and onions, baked or fried to golden perfection — a beloved Ukrainian street food and homemade comfort dish.
Prepare the dough. Mix warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 10 minutes until foamy. Add flour, salt, and oil. Knead into a soft dough. Cover and let rise for 1–1.5 hours.
Cook the filling. In a skillet, heat oil and sauté onion until golden. Add cabbage, season with salt and pepper, cook 15–20 minutes until soft and slightly caramelized.
Shape the pirozhki. Divide the dough into small balls. Flatten each, place 1–2 tbsp of filling inside, and pinch edges tightly to seal.
Bake or fry.
For baking: Place on a tray, brush with egg wash, and bake at 180°C for 20–25 min.
For frying: Heat oil and fry pirozhki on both sides until golden.
Serve. Serve warm with sour cream or as a snack with tea.
